The possibilities of creating new gardens and parks on ground level are certainly very limited, but millions of flat roofs and underground garage roofs present a great potential which can be used in variety of ways. Either these areas can be planted directly, or they can be put to uses which usually have taken place on naturally grown ground. Flat roofs and underground garage roofs, however, are building elements which have to fulfill important structural and physical functions.

Roof gardens can be intensive or extensive, depending on the purpose of the garden or park. Intensive roof gardens are visually not much different than normal gardens on the ground, but their performance is far more complex and expensive due to the required thickness of the substrate which is from 30 to 60 cm.

Extensive roof gardens are usually performed in inaccessible places or places we want to have green and pleasant to the eye, but we do not use them actively. Because of the limited thickness of the substrate 7 -15 cm, limited is a selection of plants for planting. Maintenance of such gardens is very simple, down to the first year after planting, and this is possibly occasional watering and cleaning.
